Font issues
Last Scenario uses the MS Gothic font, which is not installed by default on all Windows versions. If you do not have it, the font can be downloaded here. There is also a known issue when playing Last Scenario on Windows Vista where no text shows up at all. If this problem occurs, following these steps may fix it:
- Go to Configuration Screen, then to Regional Settings
- Go to the Administrative tab and set language for non-unicode programs to Japanese
- Reboot your PC. At this point, Last Scenario should be unable to find MS Gothic and revert to Courier New.
- Go back to Regional Settings and set the language for non-unicode programs to its original language.
- Reboot your PC again. Now, Last Scenario should properly use MS Gothic.
You can’t beat Melchior unless you have absolutely maxed characters and A LOT of healing items, and even then you get nothing, he just says you failed the test. The key is to steal from him and then escape. That’s the way you pass the test.

I’m having a major issue trying to beat Castor the second time. Basically what I’ve been doing is just playing through the game without worrying about leveling up my characters too much. Whenever I reach a boss I can’t beat I’ve just grinded for a bit by way of 99 tents in my inventory. However, there is nothing to kill in my fight against Castor, so I’m kind of hooped. I’ve been keeping track of how much damage I inflict and generally I have problems breaking 8K against, him, barely half his HP. However, I have no way to train up for the fight with him, since my saves are both inside the castle at Stonewall(saved over the wrong file due to mental lapse). My characters are all level 45/46, and the party I am using atm is Zawu(only person who can act before Castor, so she has to stay), Ethan, Matilda, and of course Hilbert. I have the most recent buyable armour + several equips gotten from dungeons, and I have immunity to confuse so that when I use soft to get rid of the petrification my guys aren’t confused(since I couldn’t find petrification protection). I’ve tried the fight like 2 dozen times, and failed. I’ve never had to try on another boss more than 3 times, so I’m getting really frustrated, and I’m thinking I may have to restart if I want to be able to beat him, which is really something I probably won’t bother doing given my 22 hours play times.
Is there an easy way to defeat Castor? I don’t have any anti petrify equips, though I do have pretty much every spellcard that can be obtained to that point.
Barring that, is there a way to edit the save file so I can put some items like gold dust in my inventory or transport me outside of stonewall so I can train?
It would really suck if I never finish this excellent story due to a stupid boss battle.
Do not worry, you can easily leave this dungeon and go elsewhere. Ironicaly, this “final dungeon” is far from being the most difficult. You’ll find lots of places to grind your characters and find better equipments for them.
I waited until I had done everything else before going against Castor. My characters were lvl 97/98 and it was a piece of cake. Actually, it was a mistake, I should have done Castor before. ^^
Lvl 97/98 is far too much for Castor, but lvl 45/46 seems not enough. There are many things you haven’t discovered. Go look for them.
The problem is I cannot leave the castle. If I go to the exit Matilda stops me. Thus I have no way to train up.
Oops, my bad, I thought of another fight against Castor.
Hmm, I don’t remember Castor being so difficult. Maybe you should try with other characters. Randolph is a very good healer (because he’s the most resistant of your characters). And using a mage can be a good strategy too. The problem with Ethan and Matilda is that they’re both warriors. If you also have Zawu in your group, that leaves you without any magic power (or very few).
The answer against a tough boss is most of the time a change in strategy.
Last Scenario and Exit Fate are the best RPGs ever created. You are fantastic! There is not a single game I could find(both commercial and free) which is even barely comparable to your games.
The in-depth characters and intriguing storylines of both the games are what make them unbelievably good. I can’t imagine I’ll ever like a game more than them. If I do they must be the sequel to your games.

You could do something similar to castors hp by unknown initial value, hitting hit, value has decreased,repeat. Then input 11 or something and the next hit he dies.
Personally I think Flynn is the hardest boss to get stuck on.
I don’t know why, but I’m utterly stuck fast against her on my second playthrough. I can’t exit the area, and there’s absolutely no way I can beat her, since she can 2HKO my characters, and always uses multiple hit attacks.
Impossible to grind, too, since the monsters in that area are extremely strong and also kill me quickly.

I must say, this game is very well done. By far one of the best independent games ever made. The story is compelling, the combat system is great, the lack of need for grinding is also very pleasing. And throwing in a unique mini-game to play at leisure just adds to it.
Even though you offer this game for free, you could easily have sold it for money. I look forward to future titles from SCF.
